The Portuguese Socialist MEP André Bradford died Thursday in hospital in his home country after suffering cardiac arrest earlier this month.
Bradford, 48, had been hospitalized on July 8 and was placed into a medically induced coma.
In a statement sent to POLITICO, the Portuguese Socialist delegation in the European Parliament expressed its “deepest condolences, profound pain and solidarity to the bereaved family.”
“We pay the most honored homage to the man, the politician and MEP, who always fought for socialist values at regional, national and international level,” the group said.
Bradford was elected to the European Parliament for the first time in May, and had been appointed to the agriculture committee, as well as to the delegation for EU-U.S. relations. He was a substitute member of the regional development committee and the delegation for relations with Canada.
Before entering Parliament, the Ponta Delgada native was active in local government in the Azores islands, serving as a press officer for the environmental department and later becoming a political adviser and regional secretary.
