Boris Johnson said the U.K. government ‘should have the power to fulfill its promises’ and dismissed former Conservative Prime Minister John Major’s accusations of Leave campaign being deceitful.

Major said on Sunday’s Andrew Marr show that he was angry “at the way the British people are being misled” by the leaders of a “depressing and awful” campaign to get Britain out of the European Union.

He also said he fears people will vote in the June 23 referendum based on information “known to be inaccurate.” Major warned Johnson, London’s former mayor, who appeared in the same program on Sunday that he would not have the support of the Conservatives should he seek the top leadership post in the party he helped divide.

Johnson dismissed Major’s criticism and focused his criticism of Remain on Prime Minister David Cameron’s failure to manage immigration independently from Brussels.

“If you tell people you can cut immigration to the tens of thousands but are then legally unable to do that, then it is frustrating and people want an answer,” Johnson said.

“We all thought we were going to get reform of the EU,” said Johnson. “We didn’t get a sausage.”
