Hundreds of migrants charged the Greece-Macedonia border on Monday morning using a metal pole to tear down a gate as they demanded to cross into the country.

The crowd of  migrants pushed against the fence at Idomeni, ripping away barbed wire. Macedonian police fired tear gas to force them away.

The trigger was allegedly a rumor that Skopje had opened the border again. On Sunday night, a group of about 300 refugees were allowed to travel north, but the border was closed again at 4 a.m.

The refugee camp in the border village of Idomeni was intended  to shelter about 2,000 refugees as they wait for passage to Macedonia.

An estimated 6,500 migrants are stuck at the Greece-Macedonia border awaiting to cross.

Macedonia, one of the countries of the so called Balkan route, has recently introduced daily limits on the entry of refugees.
